![]() ![]() ![]() Checking total advance is far more importantnot only does proper advance ensure the most efficient. The second reason for checking timing at 3000 rpm is because not only is proper timing being verified, but total advance is also verified. You find true top dead center, calculate the degrees per inch/mm mark the hub or crank, then do point of injection and she will be on the money. This will be clearly evident when using a timing lightthe mark wont be jumping all over the place. I'll stop here in a sec, but I have found that most manufacturers timing marks are not very close at all, this is one reason that people like Deutz don't even use marks. I have seen numerous diesels burned up because the timing was off by a few degrees. Supplied with 1.5m coiled 12V power lead, inductive coupler and operating instructions. Measures timing advance range 0-60° BTDC. Composite cased Xenon timing light with inductive impulse pick-up. Then you have others like the Cummins PT pumps that requires dail indicators and cam box shims (which I own the kit and it's made me a lot of money). 12-Function Digital Automotive Analyser with Inductive Coupler. I'm not sure how to get precise settings on other pumps like roosamaster except for lining up the marks (which isn't very accurate at most times). Ofcourse this method doesn't allow you to check any type of advance mechanism. Most of the engines I work on have Bosch pumps and I simply remove the spring from the number 1 pump piston, have my engine set at the correct timing mark, then with a hand pump make diesel flow from the #1 port, roll the injector pump to right when it stops flowing (point of injection). I know they make the adapters but I have never used one. Re: Timing light for diesel engine in reply to Robert J Spence, 07-08-2001 17:17:45 The timing-advance works directly off of fuel pressure made from the back of the injection pump via a bladed low-pressure fuel pump. ![]()
